Project Background
A district in Tanzania brightened its roads in 2024 with a 50 kW solar street lighting network, replacing dark streets that discouraged evening commerce and raised safety concerns for residents.
The Challenge
Conventional pole-top solar lights suffer battery theft and vandalism, and maintaining dozens of distributed units strains a municipal budget. The district needed dusk-to-dawn reliability through the rainy season with minimal ongoing maintenance.
Our Solution
We centralized the architecture: a 50 kW solar array and a guarded battery room feed high-efficiency LED luminaires along the main road. MPPT controllers maximize charging, and light-sensor plus timer control runs the lights dusk-to-dawn, dimming in the late-night hours to stretch autonomy. One protected battery room replaces dozens of vulnerable pole-top units.
Results & Benefits
- Evening commerce revived – shops now stay open after sunset along the lit corridor.
- Safer streets reported by residents across the district.
- Theft-resistant design – centralized, guarded storage instead of exposed pole-top batteries.
- Low-maintenance operation – single-point servicing with automatic dusk-to-dawn control and rainy-season autonomy.
